can you believe we have been home for 5 months already? some days it feels like we've been home just a few weeks and others it feels like we brought him home from the hospital 19 months ago. we love this little guy!
since being home we have had a few opportunities to share our story of adoption. below are a couple of my random conversations with adults and children the last few months. some of them will be paraphrased as it has been a few months.
little boy - maybe 5 or 6 years old
boy - how come he is so dark?
me - well, we adopted him from ethiopia and their skin is darker than ours.
boy - long pause, then - so they're dark in ethiopia?
me - yes.
little girl - about 4 or 5 years old
girl - why does he have curly hair?
me - well, his mom or dad in ethiopia had curly hair.
girl - blank stare
me - we adopted him from ethiopia
girl - blank stare
- thankfully her mother came over and helped me explain the very large picture of adoption.
adult woman - 30's
woman - isn't it amazing how God brings families together even when you can't have your own children?
me - yes it is amazing how God brings families together but as far as we know we can have children.
woman - then why adopt? [this one broke my heart a little]
me - well, God broke our hearts for the amazing children in Ethiopia who need families. so we were obedient to his calling and began the journey of adoption.
woman - that's incredible. you guys are amazing.
me - God is incredible and amazing. believe me, there is nothing "special" about casey or i. loving this little boy is as easy as it gets.
adult woman - 50's
woman - isn't it amazing.
me - everything
woman - i bet you don't even notice he looks nothing like you.
me - not for a second.
since it is generally just me and david out and about i think most adults assume casey must be very dark because rarely does anyone take a second look at us. either that or they don't notice my red hair and very pale skin next to a beautifully bronzed little boy with tight curly hair and large brown eyes.
i continue to pray for opportunities to talk about our adoption and more importantly our great God who loves us and brought us through this journey.
